The boats were carrying more than 130 people when they came across rough waves in the Andaman Sea on Thursday evening local time.

One of the vessels - reportedly returning to Phuket from Koh Racha - was carrying 90 passengers when it overturned.

They are said to have been a group of Chinese tourists.

Local police commander Teerapol Tipcharoen said that at least seven people were unaccounted for, but the rescue operation is ongoing.

AT least seven people are missing after two tourist boats capsized in a popular Brit holiday resort. Two boats carrying around 130 people flipped when they ran into rough waves in Phuket, Thailand .

There are currently no reports of casualties, but a relief operation centre has been set up at Chalong Bay.

In a separate incident in the same area, another boat carrying 39 people - reportedly Chinese and European tourists - also capsized.

They have been all been returned to land via large rubber life-rafts.

Officials had earlier issued a warning of severe weather until next Tuesday, including heavy rain and strong winds.
