It is the second time Faid has pulled off a spectacular jailbreak - in 2013, he blasted his way out of a prison in northern France using dynamite before being recaptured six weeks later.

According to news channel BFM-TV, the breakout was pulled off while Faid was in the prison's visiting room at about 11.30am local time.

Three armed and well-trained men then reportedly presented themselves and demanded Faid's release.

A union representative told local media that the men were 'dressed in black and hooded' while wearing police armbands.

They were also reportedly armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles.

They managed to whisk the convict away in a helicopter which had been flown into the prison courtyard.

According to France 3, the pilot of the helicopter was an instructor waiting for a lesson to begin who was taken hostage by the men.

PARIS (Reuters) – A French gangster is on the run after being broken out of prison by heavily armed gunmen and escaping in a helicopter . He was on the run for six weeks before police captured him in a hotel with an accomplice .

He was then released unhurt.

The aircraft landed in Garges-lès-Gonesse, about 37 miles from the prison.

They were then picked up in a black Renault car before switching to a white van.

The Ministry of the Interior said a huge police response has been ordered in an attempt to catch the fugitive, who has been described as dangerous.

'Everything is being done to locate the fugitive,' an official said.

An appeals court sentenced Faid to 25 years in April for masterminding a May 2010 armed robbery that turned into a gunfight, in which a policewoman was killed.

Faid, who grew up in tough immigrant suburbs outside Paris, has made several television appearances and co-authored two books about his delinquent youth and rise as a criminal in the Paris suburbs.

He said his life of crime was inspired by American films such as 'Scarface' and 'Heat'.
