HomePod repairs cost nearly as much as a new speaker

HomePod repairs cost nearly as much as a new speaker If you're getting a HomePod, be sure to place it somewhere safe depending on what you break, it might be expensive to get a fix. Apple has updated its support pages to reveal that an out-of-warranty HomePod repair will cost $279 (£269). Throw in the shipping fee ($20 US, or £13) for a mail-in repair and you're not far off from the price of a brand new smart speaker. This is one of those times where the AppleCare extended warranty ($78 if you include the incident fee, or £68) may be the better value, at least if you're in a household where an accident is a real possibility.

Putin's Arms Buildup Puts Abe on Defensive in Islands Dispute

Putin's Arms Buildup Puts Abe on Defensive in Islands Dispute Russia is accelerating a military buildup on islands claimed by Japan, threatening to blow a hole in Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s efforts to lure President Vladimir Putin into settling the dispute. The government in Tokyo lodged a formal protest after 2,000 Russian troops held military exercises last week on the four islands, called the Southern Kurils in Russia and the Northern Territories in Japan. A few days before, Russia paved the way for its first military airbase in the area.Russia’s twin strikes came as diplomats from both countries met Feb. 6 to discuss joint economic development of the territories.

Moscow on Wednesday said it would be "very difficult" to improve US-Russia relations, which have plummeted to Cold War lows on accusations of election meddling and crises in Syria and Ukraine.

Deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov accused the US of trying to meddle in Russia's internal affairs ahead of a presidential election next month, after Washington indicted 13 Russians for an alleged covert effort to interfere in 2016 US polls.

"Paradoxically, the Americans are taking steps towards meddling in our internal affairs and exacerbating tensions in bilateral relations ahead of the presidential election" in Russia on March 18, Ryabkov told the news agency Interfax.

"Despite this, they continue -- without any foundation or proof -- to reproach us for apparently interfering in their electoral process," he said.

"Of course we in Moscow regret all of this," he said of potential sanctions against the 13 Russians who were indicted last week as part of a US federal government probe.

"It will be very difficult to move relations with the US on from their current state," he said.

Several US congressional committees and special prosecutor Robert Mueller are investigating allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election and collusion with the campaign of President Donald Trump.

Moscow has long denied any role in election interference.

The Cold War rivals have clashed over crises in Ukraine, Syria and Iran, with reciprocal expulsions of diplomats last year.

Following Russia's 2014 annexation of the Crimean peninsula and the war between Kiev and Kremlin-backed rebels, the US has imposed ever stricter sanctions on Moscow.

Trump Wants Russia Investigation to Look at Obama White House

Trump Wants Russia Investigation to Look at Obama White House President Donald Trump is suggesting that special counsel Robert S. Mueller III should expand his probe of Russia’s election meddling to include top Obama administration officials. Trump’s veiled suggestion that former President Barack Obama and his team be investigated instead of him and his campaign advisers is part of a shift in the president’s messaging in recent days.

Russian Olympic Committee reinstated by IOC .
Russia was reinstated by the International Olympic Committee on Wednesday after the remaining tests of the country's athletes at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics were all returned negative. Russians competed as neutrals at the Games after the IOC suspended the country's Olympic Committee (ROC) in December, saying it had found evidence of an "unprecedented systematic manipulation" of the anti-doping system..The IOC reinstatement means athletes can compete under the Russian flag and wear a national team uniform, while the national anthem can be played at gold medal ceremonies.
