When Margaret Thatcher Refused to Share a Plane With a Panda

When Margaret Thatcher Refused to Share a Plane With a Panda The Iron Lady didn't play when it came pandas. As CNN reports, newly declassified documents revealed that in 1981, Lord Zuckerman—president of the London Zoological Society—asked Thatcher’s staffers if the PM would be willing to share her U.S.-bound Concorde flight with the giant panda, who was being loaned to the Smithsonian Institution in order to mate with a female panda at the organization’s Washington, D.C. zoo—a move that Zuckerman saw as a “demonstration of the special relationship” between the United States and England. But Thatcher wasn’t biting, and didn’t mince words.

The contrasting conditions have given rise to a country almost perfectly divided between red and blue states —by temperature. As this Washington Post weather map shows, temperatures are diverging from normal on either end of the country

It is as easy to become divisive over political color as over sports teams. It gives people a way to divide into “us and them” and enjoy “playing games.” Political colour. Red states and blue states . Color politics .

The East Coast of the US has been plunged into a deep freeze. Waterfalls are icing over, sharkicles are washing ashore, and frozen iguanas are dropping from the trees. The cold snap is expected to continue this weekend, with temperatures forecast to be nearly 20°F below normal.

Meanwhile, the opposite is taking place out west, with temperatures this weekend predicted to be a toasty 20°F above average. Sudden thaws are bursting pipes in Calgary, warming waters are threatening ice jams in the Missouri River in Montana, and rain, not snow, is falling in Oregon’s mountains, closing ski areas and jeopardizing some of the region’s water supplies.

The contrasting conditions have given rise to a country almost perfectly divided between red and blue states—by temperature. As this Washington Post weather map shows, temperatures are diverging from normal on either end of the country:

The sharp division is a result of the behavior of the polar jet stream, the fast-flowing current of air that moves west to east across the northern hemisphere, and which can serve as a barrier separating weather patterns. Recently the jet stream has been sittingfar north above the western half of North America, which allows warm air from the Pacific Ocean to move over the western states before dipping south over the eastern states. On the eastern side of the continent, however, the cold air is being held in place by the so-called bomb-cyclone in the Atlantic.

Canada's bitter weather has even penguins coming out of the cold

Canada's bitter weather has even penguins coming out of the cold Just how cold is it in Canada? Ask the penguins at the Calgary zoo: Even they have had to take shelter. King penguins -- one of five species at the zoo in western Alberta province -- are certainly accustomed to chilly weather, more so than species like the Humboldt that prefer somewhat warmer climes, said zoo curator Malu Celli.

America may seem to be divided into red - states and blue - states on an electoral map due to state -based majorities winning the day (and not the nearly split down the middle national popular vote), but America is purple at its core

This meteorological divide has already been with us for a few weeks. More than 700 records for daily low temperatures have been recorded across the midwest and northeast since Dec. 24, while more than 600 record highs have been set in western states, according to the Washington Post.

The weather patterns have also given rise to weird anomalies. On Jan. 2, for example, the temperature was warmer in Anchorage, Alaska (high of 48°F) than New Orleans, Louisiana (high of 39°F).

Meanwhile, further north, the Atlantic coast was pounded by a freakish combination of strong winds and bone-chilling cold. In Boston, high tides flooded streets before the temperature plummeted further, freezing cars in place:

Fortunately for Boston drivers and iguanas, the weather is expected to return to more normal conditions next week.

Cold weather is the best time to look at—and photograph—the night sky .
Grab your coat and your camera, then head out under the stars. Spray Lakes Reservoir Jack Fusco shot this image with a Sony A7R Mark II camera and a wide-angle 20mm Sigma Art lens. The air above us is colder, which means it can’t support as much moisture and results in fewer obstacles between your eyes or camera and the heavens. According to Fusco, this is a boon for photographers during the day as well. “These conditions can provide a great looking image at sunrise or sunset.
