Nintendo has unveiled Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a new version of its incredibly popular crossover fighting game, which features every single character from the series history plus some new ones.

More than half of Nintendo's pre-E3 Nintendo Direct broadcast was devoted to the game, detailing the new designs and movesets for expected characters like Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda and Pikachu alongside returning guests including Street Fighter's Ryu and Metal Gear Solid's Snake.

The massive roster even includes variants of individual characters, for example featuring Link (now designed to look like his Breath of the Wild incarnation) as well as Child Link and Toon Link. There are also new and returning stages to fight in.

In addition to featuring every character ever seen in Smash, the game introduces new characters as well. During the broadcast series creator Masahiro Sakurai introduced Princess Daisy (from Mario), Inklings (from Splatoon) and Samus' nemesis Ridley (from Metroid) as playable characters.

As ever, competitive gaming is just as big a focus of Smash as casual slugfests, with Sakurai detailing a wealth of changes to refine, speed up and rebalance the game. He also said it would be compatible with Nintendo Gamecube controllers, a much-requested pro-level request. It will also be compatible with all previous Smashamiibo.

The game will launch for Nintendo Switch on December 7 this year, which is slightly later than expected. Many believed the game would arrive in time for the launch of Nintendo's paid online multiplayer service in September.

Super Mario Party features new minigames played in a variety of ways, from traditional controller-and-TV types to tabletop modes that run across two wirelessly connected Switch systems. It's releasing on October 5.

Other new games introduced during the broadcast, which are coming to Switch but may also make their way to other platforms, include Overcooked 2 (sequel to the chaotic co-operative cooking challenge game) and Killer Queen Black, a new version of a modern arcade favourite that lets two teams of four players compete in real-time strategic battles. Dragon Ball Fighter Z, previously released on other systems, is also on the way,

Finally, Nintendo gave a brief reminder that new Pokemon games are coming to Switch in November, Pokemon Let's Go Eeevee and Let's Go Pikachu. Along with Smash Bros, the games will be available for E3 attendees to play at the show.
