Gmail Security Issue Exposes Accounts to Hacks

Gmail Security Issue Exposes Accounts to Hacks Security expert James Fisher highlighted a new threat that could expose Gmail users to hackers. The issue takes advantage of the fact Google has a “dots don’t matter” policy in how it processes email addresses. For example, it views “johnsmith@gmail” as being identical to “j.o.h.n.smith@gmail.” To Netflix, on the other hand, both of those email addresses would be assigned to different accounts on its platform.

Google is making official the changes we saw leaked earlier this month, with email snoozing, nudging, and confidential mode making their debut alongside a substantial visual redesign for Gmail on the web.

Google has finally been rolling out its new massively redesigned Gmail for desktop and mobile to 1.4 billion of users worldwide, which might be the most significant single upgrade in Gmail 's history.

Speculation across technology sites such as Tech Crunch and Android Authority, suggest one of Google’s most widely used products, the web version of Gmail, is due a major update.

“We're working on some major updates to Gmail (they're still in draft phase). We need a bit more time to compose ourselves, so can't share anything yet - archive this for now, and we'll let you know when it's time to hit send," Google told 9Finance.

The new Gmail is reportedly set to look a lot more like the Gmail mobile app, with new additions potentially including a “snooze” feature, an automatically generated “smart reply” suggestions, which is already available in Google’s mobile email apps and the new design will enable a sidebar of plugins, giving users easy access to other Google apps like Calendar.

Google didn't confirm details of the Gmail redesign to CNBC, but said in an emailed statement: "We're working on some major updates to Gmail (they're still in draft phase).

Android Authority reports that people who pay for Google’s suite of services, called GSuite, were contacted to see if they wanted to participate in a program to preview upcoming changes, including the redesign for Gmail.

The last time Google overhauled Gmail’s web look was in 2011.

Then they opted for a spaced-out, cleaner design and like most redesigns, it drew mixed reactions with many users missing Gmail’s original look.

Google is set to host its annual developers conference on May 8 which is when it often unveils new software and services.

A number of Gmail users got spam messages — from themselves .
Gmail is usually pretty good about filtering out unwanted spam messages, but a number of users reported earlier today that their inboxes were suddenly flooded with ads that were apparently sent from their own accounts, according to Mashable. Users posted to Gmail’s Help Forum, reported that the messages appeared to have been sent from their own accounts, despite the fact that they were secured with two-factor authentication and updated passwords.
