'I call bull----': Tallis slams Cleary hype Gorden Tallis has hit out at the hype around Ivan Cleary's coaching, outlining an unflattering comparison with legends Craig Bellamy and Wayne Bennett.Speaking on Triple M's Sunday NRL, a clearly bemused Tallis slammed the $1.5 million price tag Cleary is reported to be attracting as he pondered the clamour to poach the hottest coach in the game from the Wests Tigers.

Ivan Cleary (born 1 March 1971) is the Head Coach of the Wests Tigers in the NRL and an Australian former rugby league footballer. He is a former head coach of the Penrith Panthers and New Zealand

It’s been a busy year for The Lurker and, with round 22 one day away, the rumour hound has all the latest on coaching dramas, footy player quote bingo and salary cap shenanigans.

The Ivan Cleary ‘hijacking’ by Penrith is the biggest story in league at the moment - and may well end up the biggest of the year.

So where are things at? It’s changing by the minute, but I can confirm that as of right now, two popular rumours are false.

1. That Panthers supremo Phil Gould - the man who sacked Cleary only a few years ago - is doing the negotiations.

2. That Cleary has asked the Tigers for a release for next season.

On point one, Panthers chairman Dave O’Neill was the man who first approached Cleary a week ago, putting the bold plan to him to unite him with some Nathan at the club.

Gould, who hired Anthony Griffin, was content to keep Griffin in his job as ‘puppet’ coach until the end of the season, but the Panthers board disagreed - and told Gould that Griffin had to go, setting events in motion.

Gus reveals timeline on coaching choice

Gus reveals timeline on coaching choice Penrith Panthers general manager Phil Gould has discussed when a decision on who will coach the Panthers in 2019 and beyond will be made. Gould's options to replace Griffin appear to have already dwindled to an extent with rumoured lead candidate Ivan Cleary pledging to see out his current contract with the Wests Tigers. Admit heavy speculation linking him with a return to Penrith, Cleary addressed the rumours in a lengthy statement to the media on Saturday."I am enjoying my contribution at this club. The club's growing nicely.

As far as point two goes, Cleary, a good poker player if ever there was one, is keeping his cards close to his chest.

He has yet to say a word to the Tigers about wanting out - but he is short-priced favourite for the Penrith gig and the bookies rarely get it wrong.

The Tigers are talking legal action to enforce his contract, but they know deep down there is little point making a coach stay if his heart isn’t in it.

Still on Cleary and the Tigers, plenty of people who know what is going on at the club have declared it hypocritical for the joint venture to jump up and down about the coach breaking his contract.

The Tigers didn’t honour their deals with their last three coaches, terminating them all before their contracts were up.

Ditto Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah, their two greatest ever players, who were moved on while still under contract.

Double standards if there ever were any… but then this is rugby league!

Tigers tell Panthers hands off Cleary The Wests Tigers have said they will not entertain granting coach Ivan Cleary an early release from his NRL contract after he was targeted by Penrith.Cleary has emerged as the Panthers' No.1 target despite the fact he still has two years to run on his NRL contract at the joint venture.

All the Cleary talk has taken the spotlight off the referees, but there is still plenty of drama in the ranks.

Touch judge Rickey McFarlane, the man made the scapegoat for that mix-up in the Cronulla-Canberra game a few weeks ago, was dropped for two rounds by refs boss Bernard Sutton.

McFarlane, one of the game’s most experienced touch judges, has been left out of the top grade for a third straight week, effectively extending his ban and putting his career in jeopardy.

He is believed to be thinking of hanging up his flag as a result, disillusioned with the referees’ management, like many others within their ranks.
