Running a half marathon tests your mental strength as much as it does your physical fitness. Running your first half slower than the second half (called a negative split ) is the key to running a smart and enjoyable half marathon.

Former New South Wales captain Paul Gallen has criticised the Blues for not playing smart football in their Game 3 loss to Queensland.

After taking a shock lead into the half, the Blues were stunned in the second half as tries to Valentine Holmes and Daly Cherry-Evans gave the Maroons a 18-12 win.

The Blues’ second half was marred by several errors, and Gallen was clear in his assessment of the team’s efforts.

“I don’t think New South Wales played smart in the second half,” he said.

Remember the righteous indignation at spring training when Sports Illustrated ranked the Blue Jays’ starting rotation No. 16 in the major leagues? Well, those same starters are going to have to be lights out in the second half to even be worthy of that middle-of-the-pack rating.

Gallen’s opinion was echoed by former Blues coach Phil Gould who said that the team didn’t play as a united team in their second half meltdown.

“I think at different times in the second half, we just weren’t coming together as a team, it seemed to be individual efforts trying to get out of trouble,” Gould said.

Comment: Why Ben Hunt shouldn’t play Origin again

Comment: Why Ben Hunt shouldn’t play Origin again Today when the Queensland Maroons announce their State of Origin squad, I am expecting them to name Ben Hunt in the number seven jersey. If I’m Kevin Walters, I wonder what the point is of making drastic changes to the Maroons squad. The final game is a dead-rubber. The squad will want some stability particularly after the potential injury concerns over the weekend to players like Greg Inglis and Dylan Napa.

Gould also suggested that the young Blues side will have learnt a lesson in dealing with the raucous Suncorp Stadium crowd that will stand them in good stead for future Origin series.

“It’ll be a great learning experience for these young fellas,” he said.

“When Queensland gets in front here in Queensland, it’s a different sort of crowd, it’s a different sort of atmosphere, it lifts them and it can be a little intimidating.”

Both Gallen and Gould conceded that fatigue from the sapping contest played a key role in the Blues’ mental errors in the second half.
