Former NBA star Andrew Bogut has slammed the ABC and journalist Tracey Holmes over their reporting of the Australia-Philippines “basketbrawl” World Cup qualifier, accusing them of allowing “blatant lies” to be spread.

A well-known basketball photographer from the Philippines who covered the game, Winston Baltasar, told the ABC racial taunts from Boomers players may have contributed to the melee.

The Australian Basketballers’ Association denied the allegations, calling them “unsubstantiated and highly defamatory” in a statement.

“Despicable @ABCnews and @ABCAustralia!” he wrote.

“The fact @traceyleeholmes put it to print is even more horrid. P--- poor journalism.”

“This isn’t about backing Australia. Its (sic) about printing and giving time to numerous blatant lies that were put out to make throwing chairs and blindside punching ppl more acceptable.”

Long-time Australian national team big man and former NBA pro Andrew Bogut expressed his disbelief that players from Gilas Pilipinas had the audacity to smile and take a selfie after a violent brawl broke out during the Australia versus Philippines tilt, Monday evening.

“I couldn't hear exactly who said it, but I did hear it, and like I said when the Boomers were up by 30 points I don't think words like that should be thrown around.”

In a joint statement, the Australian Basketballers’ Association (ABA) and Basketball Australia refuted the claims.

“The allegations made by Mr Baltasar are unsubstantiated and highly defamatory and we are reviewing our legal avenues to address them,” said ABA CEO Jacob Holmes.

“The Boomers pride themselves on their inclusive and diverse composition, just like the country they represent and the comments made by Mr Baltasar and republished by the ABC have caused immense distress to our players.”

Basketball Australia boss Anthony Moore was equally damning.

“Australian basketball prides itself on being a diverse sport that embraces all sections of the community. We take these allegations against our players extremely seriously and are deeply disappointed the ABC should choose to publish them,” he said.
