Queensland selector Darren Lockyer has left the door ajar for Darius Boyd to continue his State of Origin career, claiming the Brisbane captain only stood down from representative football for noble reasons.

Boyd caused a stir on Monday when he announced that he was ‘done’ with representative football after initially missing out on selection in game one and then being overlooked again after veteran fullback Billy Slater withdrew with a hamstring problem.

The decision floored Maroons coach Kevin Walters, who is hoping that Slater will return for the must-win Origin II in Sydney, but Lockyer told Wide World of Sports he wasn’t reading too much into it because Boyd’s decision had been prompted to give younger players a go.

“I read his comments and it’s not like he formally announced his retirement from rep football,” Lockyer said.

“He’s indicated he thinks it’s what’s best for the team to pick the younger generation.

“That’s a selfless act from Darius and I think (Queensland coach) Kevvie (Walters), myself and (selector) Gene Miles will take that on board.

“I know (Brisbane) got pretty well beat in the end (by Melbourne) but I thought Darius played very well for the Broncos on Sunday.”

Lockyer also defended the decision to omit Boyd even after Slater withdrew for game one, with Walters instead opting to use Michael Morgan at fullback with Anthony Milford joining the bench. “This is the thing, when you lose a game you dissect a lot of decisions that are made pre-game,” Lockyer said.

“Obviously, Darius’ experience at Origin level compared to Michael Morgan at fullback or Kalyn Ponga at fullback, he’s easily the most experienced.

“He was away in Queenstown at the time, Kevvie had already spoken to Kalyn Ponga about being on potential standby and the fact that Kevvie thought Billy was going to come through, he probably just never envisaged Darius being involved.

“It was probably too late in the week for Darius to be called into camp and I think Darius has announced now what he thinks is best for the team and I think Kevvie will take that on board.”
