David Warner will travel to England to be on commentary team as Australia take on host England in an ODI series starting June 13. The tainted former Australia vice-captain, banned from the Australian team for 12 months for his role in the ball-tampering incident, will commentate for Channel Nine .

David Warner will be part of the Channel Nine commentary team during the upcoming ODI series between England and Australia . The five-match ODI series will be followed a one -off T20 I , but it is not immediately clear if Warner ’s stint as commentator will extend past the Cardiff ODI.

The announcement went down like a bag of bricks amoung Aussie sports fans, but Channel Nine employees have defended the decision to hire disgraced cricketer David Warner as a commentator for this weekend's one-dayer against England.

Warner has been suspended from international and first-class cricket for 12 months, along with former captain Steve Smith and opener Cameron Bancroft (nine months), for his role in the ball-tampering scandal that rocked world cricket in March.

His appointment to the commentary box was met with disbelief by many Australian cricket fans, but veteran presenter Tim Gilbert has backed the move.

Former Australia vice-captain David Warner , who is currently serving a one -year ban from international cricket, is all set to don the commentator ’s hat for Channel Nine during Australia ’s ODI series in England .

"We've been criticised by some, but I don't understand why," Gilbert said on the Today Show on Tuesday.

"(He) has been banned from playing cricket, I get that. But has he been banned from earning money, banned from working? He has a family.

"They did the wrong thing, they've owned up, they've fessed up, hands up in the air and they're banned.

"Not banned from any commentary boxes. I can't see the criticism."

Today Show co-host Karl Stefanovic believed the commentary stint will allow Warner the opportunity to explain what happened in South Africa.

Stefanovic said Warner's co-commentators could get the "chance to question him and to ask him questions about what happened and what his thought process is.

"I can't wait to hear from him... I think it's an astounding appointment."
