Hodge was not reported and coaches Chris Fagan and John Worsfold believed the former Hawthorn skipper did not have a case to answer.

However, the fact Heppell had been left concussed meant the incident was to be scrutinised by match review officer Michael Christian.

In a statement, the AFL said on Monday that Hodge had no other option than to collide with Heppell.

"The ball was loose in front of Hodge, who was seeking to take possession. As Hodge prepares to take the ball, Heppell props in front of the Brisbane player, allowing him to contest the ball or prepare for a tackle," the AFL said.

"Hodge makes contact with the Essendon player as he runs in the line of the ball. It was the view of the match review officer that Hodge was contesting the ball and had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball."
