Queensland coach Kevin Walters has been blindsided by Darius Boyd 's sudden retirement from representative football as the Maroons face another fortnight of uncertainty around Billy Slater's fitness. 'My time's done ': Darius Boyd quits representative footy after Origin axing. A fortnight after Queensland coach Kevin Walters overlooked him based on form for the first time since his 2008 debut, the veteran NRL fullback pulled the plug to join retired Maroons Johnathan Thurston Celebrations .

In his first game since being axed from his Queensland duties, Broncos skipper Darius Boyd responded with purpose, scoring his side’s first try to go with some creative touches against Melbourne on Sunday.

Spotting the cameras in his sights, Boyd flaunted the letters ‘KW’ on his wrist strapping, prompting viewers at home to suggest he may be sending a message to his former Origin coach.

“Kayla and Willow, my wife and daughter,” Boyd explained with a smile after the game.

“If you have a look it’s on their every week.”

Asked in jest if he is aware KW is also coach Walters’ initials, Boyd replied: “I’m aware of that now but it’s there every week, Kayla and Willow are my wife and daughter.

“You guys will talk what you want to talk but it’s a reference to my family.”

‘’It might be Kerrod,’’ Walters laughed in reference to his brother.

Roaming all corners of the field, the veteran fullback was getting his hands dirty, first through a brilliant blind side play that was put to bed by Cheyse Blair before dashing down the field with a brilliant kick return on the stroke of half-time.

Don’t worry, Kevvie was watching.

Time to move on from Smith era: Walters

Time to move on from Smith era: Walters Queensland coach Kevin Walters says it is time the Maroons moved on from the Cameron Smith era ahead of Wednesday's State of Origin opener in Melbourne. It may be easier said than done for Queensland to forget retired skipper Smith after he played a hand in the Maroons' dominant run of 11 series wins in 12 years.

‘’It’s the freest I’ve seen him run all season he looks like he’s got his speed back and his mojo back,’’ Walters said in Fox Sports commentary.

Boyd rejected an invitation to train with the Maroons at Sanctuary Cove for a holiday in Queenstown with his family to refresh both mentally and physically.

Some reports suggested it led Walters to call in Kalyn Ponga and Anthony Milford as reinforcements over the Broncos leader when Billy Slater went down injured, however that was quickly shut down.

‘’I’ve spoken to Darius about that. We just think at the moment Darius isn’t quite at the level where he knows he should be,’’ Walters said on Monday.

‘’If Darius can get back up to where the great Darius Boyd has been for Queensland, he’ll get himself back into this side and I had that conversation with him yesterday.

‘’I did see a little bit of talk around him going on holidays and all that. It had nothing to do with that.’’
