The veteran skipper stepped away from the representative arena this year along with Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk.

And while he won't be running out with the Maroons at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday night, Smith has been a visible figure in the lead-up to the series opener.

Inglis, who will captain Queensland for the first time, says Smith had given him some insights into what the role entails.

"Having Smithy's presence around camp really gave the boys an extra boost," he said.

"He's a 42-game veteran of Origin football, which is unheard of.

"Having him around in his hometown was something and I think he just wanted to be a part of the team another time.

"He let me do my own thing and said 'mate, just go out there and be you. Kevvie, Geno and Locky said that as well.

"It's an honour and a privilege to lead Queensland."
