Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has made a stunning backflip by stating his intentions to make a move on Daniel Ricciardo at the end of the season.

Wolff’s decision comes just a week after he was quoted as saying that Mercedes was not looking at the Australian star.

In the earlier report, Wolff said that his team was only looking at drivers under contract.

“We are not looking at drivers outside of Mercedes at the moment because, first of all, we need to give our support to our two guys, that’s the priority,” Wolff said.

“It’s like if you’re happy with your wife, you don’t look elsewhere.”

However, Wolff has now declared that he will indeed consider Ricciardo, insisting that he was misquoted in the earlier report.

“I was not translated correctly,” Wolff said.

Ricciardo is under contract at Red Bull until the end of the current F1 campaign and has been offered a new deal. He’s making the Milton Keynes-based team sweat on his decision though amid interest in signing him up from Ferrari and Mercedes .

“If we were to look at others, Daniel [Ricciardo] is definitely among them.”

Despite Wolff’s interest in Ricciardo, Mercedes’ first point of action is expected to be the signing of reigning champion Lewis Hamilton.

“Obviously we don’t want to lose him and I don’t think he wants to go anywhere else,” Wolff said.

Ricciardo, who is out of contract at Red Bull at the end of the season, said he would relish the challenge of having Hamilton as his teammate if he was to join Mercedes.

“I’d love to obviously be challenged against the best and Lewis [Hamilton] is obviously up there,” Ricciardo said.

“I don’t want to say it’s just Lewis I’m looking for but that would be a good challenge.”
