West Coast ruckman Nic Naitanui could join Geelong forward Tom Hawkins as test cases at the AFL tribunal.

The popular thinking is that the Eagles will challenge Naitanui's one-match ban for rough conduct.

His brutal tackle left Port Adelaide's Karl Amon with concussion.

But it was not a sling tackle and North Melbourne coach Brad Scott is among those who feel that Naitanui did not do much wrong.

"It's a push in the back, I think that's the penalty," Scott told Channel Seven's Talking Footy.

"If Nic had managed to roll Karl, then everything would have been fine.

AFL greats line up to slam Naitanui suspension AFL greats Nick Riewoldt, Brendon Goddard, Brian Taylor and Bob Murphy have all slammed the one-match suspension handed out to West Coast ruckman Nic Naitanui. Collingwood captain Nick Maxwell will miss at least one premiership match if he is found guilty of a rough conduct charge at the AFL tribunal tonight.

The AFL tribunal is criticised for giving Richmond's Bachar Houli a lighter suspension after it took into account comments made by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and character evidence from television presenter Waleed Aly.

"West Coast will probably challenge that."

Hawkins was referred directly to the tribunal for intentional umpire contact.

But the Cats star insists the incident with Dean Margetts was accidental.

He thought it was a GWS opponent when he pushed Margetts' hand away.

Cats coach Chris Scott has no problem with the case going to the tribunal.

"This is one of the rare cases in my view, where I actually think, even though we've got a vested interest, it's not a bad thing putting it up to the tribunal," Scott told AFL360.

"It gives Tom a chance to say his piece and at the very least, make it clear there was contact - he acknowledges that - (and) there shouldn't be contact with umpires, it should be avoided at all costs.

"But this wasn't a situation where he thought, 'I'm going to push an umpire'."
