Ponga enters Maroons Origin consideration

Ponga enters Maroons Origin consideration Newcastle fullback Kalyn Ponga has entered Queensland State of Origin contention after starring in Saturday's 15-10 NRL win over Brisbane. Boom fullback Kalyn Ponga says he is ready for the cauldron of State of Origin football with the Newcastle fullback increasingly being spoken about as a Queensland debutant this year. The 20-year-old starred in the Knights' 15-10 NRL win over Brisbane on Saturday, with Mitchell Pearce describing his teammate as the most gifted young footballer he's ever seen.

Manly halfback Daly-Cherry Evans has admitted he had a ‘lover’s tiff’ with halves partner Jackson Hastings in the lead-up to their embarrassing loss to Wests Tigers at Lottoland on Sunday.

The Sea Eagles were booed off the ground by their hometown fans after a disappointing first half performance which saw them trail 20-0. They recovered in the second half but never made a game of it before going on to lose 38-12.

Hastings was ruled out of the match with an Achilles problem but reports surfaced on Sunday that he had been involved in an altercation with Cherry-Evans during a training session at Gladstone before their loss to the Gold Coast Titans in round five.

NSW coach Brad Fittler has earlier addressed the issue on The Sunday Footy Show.

“He’s picked the wrong bloke to scuffle with, the captain,” Fittler said.

“It’s not the first time two players (have been) scuffling.

“You know what, when things get heated at training and everyone is putting in and it’s competitive, it actually happens quite often that blokes will just go a bit too far.”

“You don’t take on the captain and he’s a halfback, at least you get a bit of credibility about it if you’re fighting a front rower, but a little blonde halfback, nope.”

While Barrett was not keen to address the incident in the post-match press conference, he admitted the Sea Eagles performance had been disappointing against the Tigers and his team was struggling to cope with pressure when things went against them on the field.

“It was diabolical on a number of fronts,” Barrett said.

“We have to be more resilient when things aren’t going good.

“To get booed off at halftime … I’m embarrassed about our first half.”
