The Australian benefitted from quick thinking from the Red Bull team, which pitted both its drivers at opportune moments in order to wrestle control of the race from Ferrari and Mercedes.

"Holy s***!" was all Ricciardo could initially offer over the team radio after he was shown the chequered flag, with his team boss Christian Horner praising an "absolutely clinical" drive.

"Cut throat. Scary," Horner said.

Ricciardo wants two-year deal because of F1 uncertainty

Ricciardo wants two-year deal because of F1 uncertainty Daniel Ricciardo says he does not want his next Formula One contract to tie him down for the next four years due to the uncertainty over the sport's future and instead wants to sign a two-year deal. The 28-year-old Australian, winner in China at the weekend and one of the hottest properties on the market, is out of contract with Red Bull at the end of the year."I don't want to sign anything too long because I don't know where the sport's going," The Times newspaper quoted him as saying on Wednesday."I feel like life is happening pretty fast.

Daniel Ricciardo has produced a storming drive , battling back from 17th position to win an incident-packed Azerbaijan Grand Prix from the Mercedes of Valterri Bottas and Williams' Canadian rookie Lance Stroll.

Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas finished second and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen third but the driver of the day was without a doubt Ricciardo, whose daring passing moves had the commentators gasping in disbelief.

It was Ricciardo's sixth win in Formula 1, with every one of those wins coming from outside a top three grid position, cementing his status as one of the most exciting drivers in the sport.

His pass on Lewis Hamilton on the turn 14 hairpin from well back was particularly audacious, seemingly catching the four-time world champion by surprise.

Ricciardo: Just give me title shot

Ricciardo: Just give me title shot Daniel Ricciardo believes his stunning Chinese GP victory proves he would win a Formula 1 world title if given the right tools.  In a chaotic and action-packed finish in Shanghai, Ricciardo rose from sixth to the lead in less than 20 laps in an advance which included stunning overtakes on Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen and Valtteri Bottas. For all his talent this was only Ricciardo's sixth F1 win, his emergence coinciding with Red Bull's post-2013 dip, but the Australian is desperate for more so he can maximise his talent and fight for championships.

"Sometimes you've just got to lick the stamp and send it," Ricciardo said of the move.

"I don't know what it is, I don't seem to win boring races. They're all pretty fun. I didn't expect that," he said after the race.

"Put ourselves back 24 hours and I thought I might be starting from the back of the grid," Ricciardo said of Red Bull's engine troubles, which have plagued the team early in the season.

Mechanics had two hours to change the engine on Ricciardo's Red Bull on Saturday, pulling off the feat just in time to give Ricciardo two minutes on the track to set his qualifying time.

Both Red Bulls were called into the pits early in the race in order to get a jump on their rivals, with Mercedes quickly following suit. Ferrari, who were leading the race at the time through Sebastian Vettel, were slower to react and lost the lead to Bottas.

Ricciardo: Red Bull needs more wins to convince me to stay

Ricciardo: Red Bull needs more wins to convince me to stay Daniel Ricciardo says Red Bull still needs to win more Formula 1 races in the near future if it is to convince him to stay on board for 2019. The Australian’s contract is up at the end of this season, and he is an obvious candidate for both Ferrari and Mercedes if they choose to replace one of their current drivers. While Red Bull’s speed and strategic brilliance that helped Ricciardo win in China on Sunday will have boosted its chances of retaining him for next year, the Aussie says things are not yet so clear cut.

VALUE BETS Daniel Ricciardo (25/1 a win , 7/2 a podium) The young Australian has been POLE POSITION: Lewis Hamilton 6/10 Hamilton is the clear favourite for a win in China , with the Mercedes driver looking for a hat trick of wins this season along with his third win at the Chinese Grand Prix .

“It was a great Grand Prix and they have screwed it up.” Meanwhile, a deflated Daniel Ricciardo has shared his thoughts after a disappointing engine failure saw him depart Austin within the first 20 laps. The Aussie was driving out of his skin to pressure Valtteri Bottas in third before the mechanical

Then, again the Red Bull strategists were the fastest to move when a safety car was called onto the track, pulling the two drivers in and putting the cars on soft tyres to gain a speed advantage for the remaining laps.

"It was crazy. A lot of fun," Ricciardo said of his superior pace over his rivals.

While Ricciardo was clinical in mowing down the Ferraris and Mercedes in front of him, his younger teammate Max Verstappen showed less composure, attempting a dangerous move on Vettel which saw both drivers run off the track and the Dutchman ultimately receive a 10 second penalty.

Championship leader Vettel finished back in eighth, while Hamilton crossed the line fifth, one spot above the penalised Verstappen.

Former world champion Nico Rosberg said the race was further proof Ricciardo is the best over-taker in F1.

"Max and Daniel are the best, but Max just messes up too much," he said.

"Daniel just makes it stick and that makes him the best in Formula 1. He's really a huge talent at overtaking.

"When I was racing he was the guy I hated having behind me the most."

Ricciardo's win was his first since the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in June, 2017.
