Many grooms knock back a few beers with mates and take it easy the morning of their wedding, but not Rick Lawton.

He was up at the crack of dawn to huff and puff his way through a 21.1-kilometre running race just hours before he took his marriage vows in a harbourside ceremony in 2015.

Mr Lawton moved from Britain after he met his wife, Edith, and the pair settled on a wedding date that happened to fall on the same day as The Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon.

"It just so happened I'd already booked to do the half marathon so I just thought I'd do the two together," Mr Lawton said.

He then dashed home, quickly changed into his wedding attire and the couple hopped on to a water taxi at Rose Bay to travel to their relaxed ceremony at Darling Point.

Mr Lawton said he was fuelled by adrenaline, together with the nerves and excitement of the wedding, throughout the celebration as it continued well into the night.

"It was just one of those awesome days.

"I remember on the Monday and Tuesday [afterwards] being particularly exhausted; my legs and muscles were very tired."

Mr Lawton will line up to start the half marathon for the third time in May.

He said the "fantastic atmosphere" and race course, which takes in city and harbour views, kept him coming back each year.

He admitted he might struggle to train as much as he would like this time around given the eastern suburbs couple now have two young children, aged 22 months and seven months.

"It's just finding the time, really, and going for a few practice runs.

"I need to up my game."

Every year the London Marathon conjures up stories that could only happen at an event of this kind in a major city. This year we've already seen a number of inspirational stories, such as the two women running in their underwear to raise money for mental health charities and promote body positivity.
