Newcastle boss Phil Gardner has pulled a group of players into line - including Mitchell Pearce, Shaun Kenny-Dowall and Daniel and Jacob Saifiti - over a string of minor "push-and-shove" incidents.

Earlier in the week, The Daily Telegraph claimed the events failed to hit the local media, prompting Gardner to take action and investigate his players.

The incidents are believed to be minor and Fairfax Media reports Gardner is pleased to move on with no punishment after reaching out to a number of licensed establishments.

“We’ve investigated both those and we spoke to the bar staff and security, and both those incidents, we’ve not had to take any action against the players,” Gardner told Fairfax Media.

Despite the small severity of the events, Gardner has reminded them of the impact their behaviour can have in the public eye.

“What we have done is remind them that, hey, this is Newcastle, you’re on display. Here in Newcastle, everyone is interested and if our players go out, they attract attention,'' he said.

“The standards of behaviour need to improve. We’ll be taking a very tough line with anyone whose standard of behaviour is not what is expected of a professional rugby league player.
