The Canberra Raiders have bottled an 18-point lead to lose their season opener against the Gold Coast Titans at Robina Stadium on Sunday night.

Titans centre Konrad Hurrell scored inside the final 90 seconds to drive a dagger into green hearts and steal a 30-28 victory from the jaws of defeat.

The Titans trailed 18-0 after just 12 minutes but took advantage of a mountain of second half possession to even the ledger late in the piece.

A late Joey Leilua try reignited Canberra's chances of avoiding an opening round boilover in a game they looked like winning in a canter.

But Hurrell struck to continue Canberra's woes in close games - the Raiders lost eight games by six points or less in 2017 and the horror run continues.

The arrival of rookie coach Garth Brennan to the Gold Coast doused Canberra coach Ricky Stuart's hopes of celebrating his 100th game in charge of the Green Machine with a win.

But Stuart's decision to give Havili first crack at the vacant No. 9 jersey proving an inspired choice.

Tongan international Havili beat Craig Garvey to the starting hooker role and filled Josh Hodgson's boots with aplomb as the Raiders look to bury the demons of 2017 and return to premiership contention.

Stuart sprung a late change when he called Blake Austin back into the starting side to partner Sam Williams in the halves, pushing five-eighth Aidan Sezer back to the bench.

But the opening impact was reserved the golden-toothed rake from Tonga, who looked threatening out of dummy half before charging over for Canberra's first try of the season in the fourth minute.

Havili had played just 24 top grade games in his first three seasons but the 25-year-old looked like a seasoned first grader in his Green Machine debut.

The Raiders were out running the clock with tries to Havili, fullback Jack Wighton and lock Elliott Whitehead in the opening 12 minutes before the Titans could even find their feet.

The blistering start started to go downhill when Raiders skipper Jarrod Croker left the field for a head injury assessment after being barrelled over by rampaging Titans centre Konrad Hurrell.

But Croker soon returned following a Paulo four-pointer with the visitors taking a 24-12 lead into the half-time break.

The Titans were knocking on the door of a comeback early in the second half thanks to a swathe of penalties given away by an ill-disciplined Canberra outfit.

A host of repeat sets eventually wore the Raiders down and the Titans scored twice to level things up - before Leilua crossed and the Raiders stemmed the bleeding.

The Raiders have opened with a defeat and now look to right the wrongs against the beaming Newcastle Knights at Canberra Stadium next week.
