South Sydney star Angus Crichton has broken his silence on his shock off-season decision to lop off a finger, revealing the prospect of a six-month layoff was simply not an option.

The 21-year-old sent shockwaves through the rugby league community after opting to amputate the middle finger on his left hand.

His decision divided opinion but the Sydney Roosters-bound back-rower insists he gave it plenty of thought after a lengthy battle with the troublesome digit.

Throughout history the two teams left standing in the first weekend of October are usually the ones with an empty casualty ward, bar the Cowboys last season.

South Sydney Rabbitohs' Angus Crichton is so eager to be fit for the 2018 NRL season, he has had a troublesome injured finger chopped off.

“A lot of people think it was a spur of the moment decision but it’s been going for three years,” Crichton, who had his finger fused four times, told NRL.com.

“The alternative was a joint replacement which was less chance of healing and a six-month recovery – I did it to play.”

His explanation should go some way to allaying any fears Rabbitohs fans had about Crichton’s commitment to the club after agreeing to a long-term deal with arch rivals the Sydney Roosters from 2019.

After a breakout campaign in 2017 the former schoolboy rugby union star has his sights set on a representative debut with the Blues this season.

He was one of 38 rising stars to assemble on Saturday and incoming Blues coach Brad Fittler expects big things are on the horizon for the boom back-rower.

“He sacrificed a finger, so anyone who does that for a game rugby league is going to do good things,” Fittler told NRL.com.
