Tennis great Roger Federer has spoken about Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios in a revealing interview with Nine's Erin Molan.

The world number 2 spoke about his fitness, life, kids, and the divisive Aussie firebrand in a wide-ranging interview. But when asked the question on Kyrgios, Federer gave a cheeky response.

The latter’s endorsement was revealed by actor Nick Offerman, who is apparently “frequently asked how Ron Swanson would weigh in on this election.” Ron wouldn’t think much of Trump. First of all, he ’d be very sad that a businessman entered politics.

"I think he's actually a really nice guy. I know he's got a bit of a mixed image for some people.

"I think he's incredibly talented - we had a great match in Miami this last year and also at the Laver Cup. 

"He's a great guy - he's going through the things, whatever he needs to go through. But when he's on, he's on, and he's really difficult to beat."

Federer said he was in an even better spot with his body than this time last year, when he began his miraculous run to the Australian Open title, beating long-time rival Rafael Nadal in the final.

"I definitely think I'm in a safer place if you will. Last year expectations were not there and it was just about being happy to be in Australia.

"I said before the tournament any result is a good one, so long as I don't get hurt.

"It's an incredible situation now of travelling with our kids, with my wife still willing to do it.

"In my dream that I had when I was a little boy I didn't have the vision of looking up to my box and seeing four kids, and a wife, and a coach.

The Australian Open starts Monday.
