Smith speaks on White/Maxwell toss-up Australian captain Steve Smith has spoken on the call to select Cameron White over Glenn Maxwell for the one day squadA popular figure among the crowds, Maxwell was omitted from Australia's one day side when the 14-man squad was announced nine days ago. Fresh off making 60 from 39 balls in the Melbourne Stars' loss to the Adelaide Strikers on Tuesday night, Maxwell addressed Smith's comments publicly for the first time, saying that he and Smith were friends, and that he would take the skipper's feedback on board.

Maxwell's knock in the defeat pushed his case for an ODI selection reprieve, with the Australian selectors poised to name their replacement for Chris Lynn, who will miss the series against England - which begins in Melbourne on Sunday - through injury.

Smith is venturing to Melbourne for that series, and whether recalled or not, Maxwell said he would look to catch up with Smith in the coming days to chat about what Smith meant when he said Maxwell could "train a little bit smarter".

Maxwell noted that he knew what it was like to make public comments that inadvertently become inflammatory, having been fined in late 2016 for expressing his frustration that Victorian captain Matthew Wade was batting above him for the Bushrangers.

"I'll address that with Steven personally. I'll have a chat with him. I know what it's like to say things in the media, for things to happen, I'm sure it was only good intentions behind it" Maxwell said of Smith's comments.

Dumped allrounder Glenn Maxwell plans to sit down with Steve Smith to clear the air over those ' train smarter' comments . Australia captain Steve Smith then went a step further, suggesting Maxwell needed to " train a little bit smarter".

GLENN Maxwell has refuted suggestions of a rift with Steve Smith and intends to catch up with the Australia captain to address comments made Smith last week publicly criticised Maxwell ’s training standards and implored the Victorian to ditch the ‘funky’ stuff when explaining the non-selection.

"He's only trying to get the best out of me as the Australian skipper. There's not much you can say to the guy who's second best to "The Don". You've got to listen to him. I'll be doing my best to get on his right side and do everything I can to play for Australia because that's where I want to be playing," he said.

"I'll sit down with Steve, hopefully when he gets to Melbourne, have a chat with him. We get along really well. We've got a good friendship. I'm sure we'll be fine."

Maxwell also said the ODI vacancy was not at the forefront of his mind, with his focus remaining on kickstarting the struggling Stars.

"I know that someone has to be a replacement for Lynny. I haven't been thinking about it, that's for sure. It hasn't been my focus. My focus at the moment is to try and get Melbourne Stars' their first win, and hopefully that gets us a little bit of momentum."

Steve Smith tired of Australia's 'hot and cold' form in one-day internationals .
While Steve Smith is tired of Australia's "hot and cold" form in one-day internationals, England just want to emerge from their Ashes big freeze when the two nations renew their rivalry in a five-match one-day series, beginning on Sunday. It's been a summer to forget for the tourists, conceding cricket's little urn in a 4-0 Ashes thumping, but the ODI battle is expected to be a far closer battle. Australia have slipped to No.3 in the International Cricket Council's rankings, while England is fourth but building momentum before next year's World Cup on home soil.
