Former Australian captain Michael Clarke knows all about playing at the highest level with minor setbacks, and he shared some advice with current skipper Steve Smith.

Clarke’s message was simple - don't overtrain.

Smith sat out Australia’s training session a day before the Sydney Test because of a bad back, and Clarke knows better than most what it's like dealing with a dodgy back.

Clarke expressed his concerns about Smith and says that he’ll go through similar problems if he continues to prepare the way he does.

"The key for him is going to be to sacrifice some training sessions so he can make sure he is still on the park as Australian captain," Clarke told Channel Nine .

As opposed to Clarke who finished up his T20 career when he became Test captain in 2010, Smith wants to play in all three formats for as long as he can.

Smith plans to play in the T20 series against England and New Zealand while the majority of players will be preparing for Australia’s series against South Africa.

Clarke acknowledged that Smith would ultimately know the best way to approach his game.

"I think for someone like Steve Smith, he'll assess on how he feels at the time," Clarke said.

"If mentally and physically he feels fine, then I see no reason (not to keep going). As long as he's giving himself that time.

"I think he knows his body and his game pretty well now, he'll just have to make those decisions as he goes."
