Hamilton and Vettel kiss and make up

Hamilton and Vettel kiss and make up Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel appear to have buried the hatchet after last month's controversial Azerbaijan Grand Prix.Speaking to reporters at a crowded Austrian Grand Prix news conference, the two men addressed the "road rage" controversy that has dominated the headlines since the June 25 race in Azerbaijan.

Lewis Hamilton just edged out Sebastian Vettel in final practice for the British GP as Ferrari closed the gap to Mercedes.

Less than a tenth of a second split the two world championship leaders as Ferrari quelled the dominance Mercedes had boasted in Friday practice.

Valtteri Bottas was also within a tenth of Hamilton's benchmark but Kimi Raikkonen was a distant fourth.

The session was held in cold, blustery and damp conditions before steady rain started to fall in the closing stages - prompting all the field to switch to intermediate tyres in anticipation of similar conditions in qualifying.

Austrian GP: Hamilton leads Verstappen in 1st practice

Austrian GP: Hamilton leads Verstappen in 1st practice Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton posted the fastest time ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen in the first practice session for the Austrian Grand Prix on Friday. The British driver's best lap was 0.19 seconds quicker than Verstappen, who also did well in practice for the Azerbaijan GP two weeks ago.Hamilton's teammate, Valtteri Bottas, was third quickest at 0.37 behind. The Finnish driver twice span his car on the tricky Turn One.Ferrari drivers Sebastian Vettel, who was fourth, and Kimi Raikkonen, sixth behind Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, also had minor problems.

Ahead Vettel also began to close in on Bottas who was struggling with tyre wear. With three laps to go Bottas was a slim 1.2s ahead Vettel , while Daniel was just 1.1s ahead of Hamilton .

Lap 55/56: We haven't spoken about the leader for a while now but Hamilton is ahead of Vettel by 6.8 seconds - the Brit is on the brink of victory in China. Meanwhile Verstappen is on for a first podium in China, his Australian team-mate can't get ahead of him.

But the gloom hanging over the circuit all morning didn't deter Hamilton from setting a new fastest lap ever recorded at Silverstone in its current layout before Vettel suddenly sparkled - metaphorically and literally - as he found an extra second of pace compared to Friday when the Scuderia are thought to have run their newly-updated engine on reduced power.

Hamilton's benchmark was also half a second faster than the quickest time set by Bottas when the Finn topped Friday's timesheets.

Bottas on pole for Austrian Grand Prix

Bottas on pole for Austrian Grand Prix Finland's Valtteri Bottas kept champions Mercedes on pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix on Saturday after title-chasing team mate Lewis Hamilton was hit with a five-place grid penalty. Hamilton, who is 14 points behind Ferrari's championship leader Sebastian Vettel after eight races, qualified third fastest but will start in eighth place due to the automatic drop resulting from an unscheduled gearbox change.Vettel will share the front row with Bottas, with Finnish team mate Kimi Raikkonen and Red Bull's Australian Daniel Riccardo on the second row.

Ricciardo is just 1.2 seconds off Rosberg as Perez continues to struggle with his DRS, but neither Vettel or Massa can make an impression on the Mexican. Lewis Hamilton tops Canadian Grand Prix first practice ahead of Sebastian Vettel while Fernando Alonso

Hamilton raced to the victory, his second at the Barcelona circuit, by just over three seconds ahead of Vettel while Ricciardo had a very lonely race on his way to third.

Nico Hulkenberg was fifth quickest but nearly 1.5 seconds adrift of the leading runners - underlining the scale of Mercedes and Ferrari's advantage over the rest of the field.

Max Verstappen was only eighth, almost two seconds shy of Hamilton, but set his fastest lap on the slower soft tyres.

Qualifying takes place at 1pm - with more rain forecast.
