Ablett intent on AFL finals dream for Suns Speculation over his future won't go away but as he approaches AFL game 300, Gary Ablett says taking Gold Coast to the finals remains his overriding ambition. For all he's achieved in a glittering AFL career, Gary Ablett's time at Gold Coast remains an unfinished project.

Wayne Carey and Gary Ablett could become AFL legends at the annual Hall of Fame Dinner on Tuesday night. Troubled megastars Wayne Carey and Gary Ablett are among a crop being considered for AFL legend status.

One of the top Aussies to have ever set foot on this land. So good a oval is named after him. What a legend , best afl player by far. But better to watch than carey and premierships which ablett snr did not. Judd and ablett jnr close but can 't match the flair!

The title will be given at the annual Hall of Fame dinner on Tuesday night with Malcolm Blight and Jason Dunstall also in the legend frame.

One of esteemed quartet is favoured to be elevated to join the 26 ex-players already honoured with the title.

"We have six people going into the Hall of Fame tomorrow and one person, who is already in the hall, being upgraded to legend status," an AFL spokesman said on Monday.

"Of the six who are being inducted, the rules state that at least two must be classified as recent retirees whose careers finished within the last 10 years."

What a LEGEND ! He was like the BEST contested marker I have every seen. Best player the AFL has ever had King Carey ! Way better then Ablett . I watched this bloke run around a few times when I could as it was hard living in the country and getting to Melbourne to watch my team.

Legends Game. GEELONG coach Chris Scott has fired back at AFL great Wayne Carey 's assessment that the Cats are a better side without Gary Ablett . Scott took a swipe back, suggesting Carey 's jealousy could be impacting his opinion on Ablett .

One of the half-dozen fresh inductees must be a coach/umpire/administrator or media representative.

Carey and Ablett both endured tough times post-AFL, with off-field controversies tarnishing their reputations.

Both were involved in drug allegations, Ablett has remained a distant figure while Carey is back in the fold as a commentator.

But both are undisputed on-field giants who, with Dunstall, led a fondly remembered goal-kicking frenzy in the late 1980s-early 1990s.

Dunstall has had the most post-playing career impact in the AFL with a successful stint in Hawthorn's executive, as well as maintaining a solid media presence.

Former Sydney and St Kilda forward Tony Lockett - who played in the same era - achieved legend status two years ago.

The legend will be announced at the Hall of Fame dinner in Adelaide on Tuesday night.

Comment: Gold Coast's Gary Ablett is not the best player to ever play AFL: Hardie .
There are some people in the industry saying Gold Coast captain Gary Ablett is the best 300-plus game player to ever play in the VFL/AFL. I know it's hard to compare eras and this will ruffle a few feathers but there has been a few super players that are equal to and better than Ablett.Ablett's CV is pretty good but in my day you were rewarded with the club's best and fairest or the Brownlow Medal. Now there are all these different awards like the MVP (AFL Players' Association Most Valuable Player), radio, TV and newspaper awards, so the CV can get pretty expansive.
