Most workers at some point wonder how much their boss or colleagues earn. Now thousands of BHP Billiton employees know the answer, after they opened their group certificates to find they had been sent someone else's, while theirs had gone to another staff member.

The mishap has sparked an internal investigation into what BHP said was an administrative error that it was treating "very seriously".

It is understood the administration of the group certificates had been outsourced to a third party and did not involve hacking of personal data. It is also understood that up to 2000 of BHP's 23,000 national employees were affected.

Australian privacy provisions have been compromised more than in other countries, say experts.© Virginia Star Australian privacy provisions have been compromised more than in other countries, say experts.

The national mining and energy union wrote to BHP on Thursday raising concerns about the privacy breach which it said had affected NSW and Queensland employees.

Tony Maher who heads the mining and energy division of the national Construction Forestry Mining Martime and Energy Union (CFMMEU) said it was "deeply disappointing" BHP had failed to address a problem with its payroll system which had resulted in group certificates being emailed to the wrong people. He said it was not the first time the company had made similar errors with personal information.

Writing to Mike Henry the head of BHP Minerals, the union asked for an immediate response to the problem. Mr Maher told the company its response so far had been "dismissive and unsatisfactory, with employees being merely told to delete the offending emails”.

Mr Maher said he asked BHP to take immediate steps to fix the problem, notify workers about how it would do this and offer employees "an apology for the privacy breach".

A spokesman for BHP Billiton said it has launched an investigation into the disclosure of confidential payroll information to incorrect recipients.

"Contact is being made with all potentially affected people and we will work to both rectify the situation and understand the causes,” a BHP spokesman said.
