"It's unfair on northside drivers," Ms Ross said.

She said prices were likely driven down in the south as service stations were forced to compete with each other because of proximity.

"What we always say to drivers is make sure you're shopping at the cheapest retailer," she said.

"By shopping at the cheapest retailer, hopefully those other servos are following the lead."

But some spots on the northside, including North Lakes, were more affordable owing to wholesale store Costco charging cheaper prices, causing what was known as the "Costco effect".

Across Brisbane, motorists were charged, on average, 148.7 cents per litre for unleaded petrol in June, 1.1 cents per litre lower than in May, but still more than all the major Australian capital cities.

The decrease was due to a slight drop in the oil and overall fuel price margins were relatively unchanged in June.

In May, Natural Resources Minister Anthony Lynham announced a two-year trial of fuel price monitoring, with companies required to publish their prices online within 15 minutes of any change.

Dr Lynham said the government was working with the RACQ and fuel companies to put together a system that made price comparison data available to consumers as easily as possible.

"We need to ensure it doesn't create so much red tape that it is unworkable and pushes prices up," he said.

"As we've said before, the trial will start by the end of the year."

Before the announcement, the LNP had agitated for real-time monitoring of fuel prices, which it said it would introduce if it won the 2020 state election.
