The supermarket giant has taken to Twitter to confirm the IT issue has been resolved.

"The registers are now back online at all our stores," Woolworths tweeted just after 4.52pm.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused to our customers."

9NEWS understands the issue may have been triggered by a corruption of the supermarket's database, with the system unable to restore backups.

Despite the outage only lasting an hour, thousands of customers took to social media to report the issue; #Woolworths became a trending topic on Twitter in Australia, with more than 2000 tweets about the glitch.

During the outage, many customers were forced to dump their shopping in the aisles, and told to wait outside stores until the problem was resolved.

"Shoppers have been told to leave groceries in baskets," one customer from Brisbane wrote on Twitter.

Another Wooolies customer from the Melbourne suburb of Malvern accompanied a snap of a lengthy queue of shoppers with the caption, "unable to process any transactions."
