"I was told ... there was a stronger pattern recognition of brunette women CEOs," Carey, who founded software startup Glassbreakers, explains to the BBC.

"Being a brunette helps me to look a bit older and I needed that, I felt, in order to be taken seriously.”

The 30-year-old has also swapped her contact lenses for glasses and adopted a more “androgynous” style - a departure from her days of manicures and professional blow-dries.
