Channel Nine's Australian Ninja Warrior returned to screens with its second season on Sunday night, drawing in an audience that didn't quite manage to match up to last year's efforts.

Delivering Nine a peak of 1.1 million metro viewers, the launch episode was significantly down on last year's 1.68 million viewers - still, it was enough to make Australian Ninja Warrior the number one program of the night in key demographics.

While the episode saw a number of new and returning contestants try their skills on the famous Ninja run, the highlight of the night was seeing 28-year-old Olympian Olivia Vivian become the first female contestant to conquer the Warped Wall in the heat stages of the competition.

Dedicated watchers might remember the gymnast from last year; despite showing off some serious determination throughout her run, she came undone on the Wall, slipping down before she could reach the top bar.

Vivian vowed to return to conquer it, and on Sunday night she made good on her promise, stunning the live audience with her strength and agility throughout the entire course.

She saved her pièce de résistance till last though, pulling a move that no one in Australia has tried before.

Taking her second run up the Wall — contestants are allowed two attempts at this final obstacle — Vivian made it to the top easily this time.

The second her hands were clamped around the bar at the edge of the landing, she knew she had it in the bag,  so she let go of one hand, swung her body around to face the crowd, and flipped her legs over her head, placing her neatly on the finishing platform (and in the Ninja Warrior history books).

Not only did Vivian become the first female to reach the top of the Wall in a heat — last year, Andrea Hah achieved it at semi-final stage — she's also the first female in the world to successfully pull-off the backflip manoeuvre.

Her move left the show's hosts Rebecca Maddern and Ben Fordham stunned, with Fordham yelling, "What? What? What? How the hell did that happen? You’re nuts!" at Vivian once she'd completed the move.

Vivian's success sees her go through to the show's semi-final round in a couple week's time, where she'll go up against her partner Ben Polson, who also made it through to the next round.

The debut season of Australian Ninja Warrior surpassed all expectations for Channel Nine last year, raking in over 3 million viewers for its somewhat anti-climatic finale in late July.

The 2018 season of Australian Ninja Warrior kicked off with a bang tonight with returning contestant Olivia Vivian performing a seemingly impossible manoeuvre as she conquered the show’s notorious warped wall.

But history was still made ! Olivia Vivian became the first woman to clear Stage One of the National Ninja League Championships. If you haven’t had the chance to see Olivia run before, check out her performance on last year’s Australian Ninja Warrior .

With none of the semi-finalists conquering the final challenge — climbing a 22-metre rope dubbed Mount Midoriyama within 30 seconds — the show was left without a winner, sending the dedicated audience into a spin.

As Maddern pointed out at the time, it took the US version of the series seven seasons to crown a Ninja Warrior. If Vivian's efforts are any indication of how this season might go, Australian fans might not have to wait quite as long.

Australian Ninja Warrior airs on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights at 7pm on Nine.

Glenn Dyer’s TV Ratings .
It's looking more like Australian Ninja Worriers at this point.Sunday night saw the audience for the first episodes of series two of Ninja Warrior fall to a national figure of 1.31 million from the 2.23 million debut a year ago. The fall for the metros was startling — from last year’s 1.68 million to 929,000 on Sunday night, with the regional audience dropping to 390,000 from 558,000. A year ago it was topping the national and metro most-watched lists and was close to the top in the regions. Now it is number seven or lower. Last year it made a meal of the opposition, last night Seven’s House Rules had more viewers nationally — 1.29 million against 1.
