Channel 5 has been cleared by Ofcom following a comment made by The Chase's Anne Hegerty on The Wright Stuff on March 15.

Ofcom received two complaints after the incident, which saw Hegerty – known as The Governess on The Chase – speaking to journalist and transgender rights activist Paris Lees about the gender pay gap.

After Lees said she disagreed with Hegerty's opinion that there is not "an old boys' club" at the top of the business world, Hegerty replied: "Okie doke. Well, you used to be a boy, you'd know that."

Ofcom reports that during its investigation, Channel 5 accepted that the remark made by Hegerty "was capable of causing unacceptable harm and offence" and added that the comment was "wholly unexpected" due to the live nature of the show.

Ofcom also reveals in its report that the production team spoke to Lees as soon as possible, who said that she "required no apology" and so no on-air apology was made.

However, an apology was made on the show the next day by guest presenter Anne Diamond, after Channel 5 advised that this was necessary.

Ofcom reports that "Channel 5 said it was confident that if a similar remark were to be made in the future, it would be dealt with 'clearly and decisively'".

The channel has now been cleared after the incident.

Ofcom's latest report also revealed that Emmerdale was not investigated after it received 116 complaints about Gerry Roberts' controversial death scene.
