Put your money on Meghan Markle becoming Meghan, Duchess of Sussex on her wedding day, says royal etiquette expert William Hanson. And yes, that means she won't be "Princess Meghan".

Many experts are predicting the couple will get Sussex, but it’s by no means the only option.

It is a royal tradition that princes of the realm and their spouses get new titles on their wedding day.

It is entirely up to the Queen – there is no strict protocol and only a loose tradition to go by. So observers are left to make educated guesses until the big reveal.

Hanson points out that Meghan has already spurred a minor revolution in royal titles – this is the first time, to Hanson’s knowledge, that the palace has officially referred to someone as ‘Ms’.

Meghan Markle is expected to become the Duchess of Sussex when she weds Prince Harry. Harry – whose full name is Prince Henry of Wales – could turn down a title, but would be a surprise move. In this case, Meghan would be known as HRH Princess Henry of Wales.

Meet the New Potential Duchess of Sussex . She'll never become " Princess Meghan ," that's for sure. " Princess William of Wales" counts as correct, but that's why the Queen's wedding gift comes in handy.

“That was an interesting moment from a protocol purist’s point of view - that was almost the first sign that we got that things are probably going to be a little bit different when it comes to this wedding,” he says.

Most royal observers think the couple will be named the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Meghan can be a duchess without being a British citizen.

Will Markle be Princess Meghan or the Duchess of Sussex and could Prince Harry wed in Canada? Breaking News | Meghan markle royal title: will harry’s girlfriend be duchess of this english count .

Meghan Markle is expected to become a Duchess when she marries fiance Prince Harry with a princess title only given to those born into royalty. This means Meghan Markle could become history's first Duchess of Sussex , if Harry accepts this title from his grandmother.

In 2011 The Mirror reported that the Queen had promised Harry she would make him Duke of Sussex, on the condition he get married.

Harry was perfectly happy with the plan, the paper said, “after all Sussex is home to Cowdray Park, the cathedral of his favourite sport polo”.

There has only been one Duke of Sussex before, the sixth son of George III, and his two marriages were not approved by the king so there has never been a Duchess and his children were considered illegitimate.

The titles the Duke and Duchess of Clarence and Avondale are also a chance.

“But it’s probably not going to be that because the last Duke of Clarence, King Edward’s eldest son, was also one of the suspects for Jack the Ripper,” Hanson says (the theory is not widely accepted).

It would be a nice coincidence – the last Duke of Clarence is buried at St George’s Chapel at Windsor, Harry and Meghan’s wedding venue, and he was born at Frogmore House where they are holding their private family wedding reception.

Don ’ t look for Princess Meghan anytime soon. Now that Meghan Markle is engaged to Prince Harry, her royal title is one of the key issues to sort out. Unlike Kate Middleton, however, she will not be given a princess title — but the Duchess of Sussex could be just the right fit.

Meaning Meghan would then be known as the Duchess of Sussex - much in the same way Kate Middleton has become the Duchess of Cambridge. Their children could be princes and princesses - if the Queen decides.

Buckingham is also available, though it also has a long and fraught history: the third Duke of Buckingham was executed for treason against Henry VIII, a later version died of a chill after chasing foxes, and the most recent in the 19th century was so unpopular as a high-taxing Governor of Madras that he had to suppress a major rebellion.

Another title mentioned is the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, which has been unused for 70 years. As Connaught is in the Republic of Ireland, it could be a controversial choice.

Some have also speculated Harry might become the Duke of Windsor. But the last Duke of Windsor was Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne to marry Wallis Simpson, so it is not a title with fond memories for the Queen.

Other vacant dukedoms include Cumberland, Keendal, Ross and Albany. None of these dukedoms come with land or powers: there are only two duchies, Cornwall which belongs to the Prince of Wales and Lancaster which belongs to the Queen.

Sussex is available so [ Meghan ] would be HRH the Duchess of Sussex . Again, " princess by marriage" sounds amazing! Now there is one way that Meghan could officially be a princess , but it doesn' t sound like the best option for anyone.

Despite regular talk of “Princess Meghan” she is extremely unlikely to be given this title – for the same reason that Kate Middleton is the Duchess of Cambridge.

William had reportedly asked that he not be made a duke, so his wife would be Princess Catherine.

But it would not have been good protocol: princesses usually receive their titles through birth, not marriage, so the non-royal wife of a prince can't call herself a princess in her own right (William’s mother was often incorrectly called Princess Diana, but her correct title was the Princess of Wales, as her husband was the Prince of Wales).

So a "Princess Meghan" would be seen as a snub to Kate, not to mention Princess Michael of Kent. While she may be able to use the title Her Royal Highness, Princess Henry of Wales, she will most likely refer to herself - and to be referred to - by the couple's new title.

Harry is also likely to get a Scottish title – William and Kate were made the Earl and Countess of Strathearn as well as Baron and Baroness of Carrickfergus.

It’s useful to remember that it’s all up to the Queen, who can bend or even break protocol if she wants: or to be more precise, correct protocol is whatever the Queen says it is.

She may also decide to make the couple an earl and countess, like the Queen’s youngest child Prince Edward and his wife Sophie. They were made the earl and countess of Wessex at their wedding in 1999 at Windsor Castle – the first time in centuries a British prince had been made an earl rather than a duke.

There had been speculation Edward would be given the former royal dukedom of Cambridge or Sussex – instead it was announced he would eventually be the Duke of Edinburgh, the title currently held by his father.

In the meantime he got Wessex, an ancient title that hadn’t been held since the Norman conquest in 1066. Though there used to be a kingdom of Wessex, it was more recently used by author Thomas Hardy to refer to a fictional county around Dorset.

One newspaper report claimed Edward had asked to be the Earl of Wessex, instead of Duke of Cambridge, because he liked the character played by Colin Firth in the film Shakespeare in Love.

Prince Harry’s favourite film is said to be Zulu, the 1964 movie starring Michael Caine. He once said he watches it every year before Christmas. But there is no titled noble in the film.
