In 2016, Sonia unexpectedly made headlines when her live appearance on the Today show went viral. She had made comments about Muslim immigrants in Australia, and it sparked a national debate.

The 52-year-old copped an enormous amount of flak – which she tackled professionally and with grace. Despite this, Sonia has never shied away from her career in front of the camera and declares she still finds fronting live TV a thrill.

"I just love it," Sonia says as she prepares to host another season of The Voice – including the ever popular live shows. "There's a lot of freedom and excitement that comes with live TV."

"Absolutely," she replies.

She adds that, while she's used to the unedited nature of live TV, the nervous feelings never go.

"You never know what will happen," she explains. "But for some reason, I'm better when I know my mistakes will air. People might think that's strange, but it's true."

Fans will know The Voice host always looks glam while sporting her trademark smile. But the mother-of-one admits it's not always happy and easygoing on set.

"Maybe it's because I'm a mother myself, but the whole experience is quite emotional for me," Sonia explains of getting to know the reality show contestants professionally and personally.

"This is my fourth season hosting The Voice, and every year it has been different and more difficult."

She says that this year, in particular, there are a couple of contestants who blew her mind.

"You hear their back stories and you're like, 'Wow'," she says. "Sometimes I feel I get more upset and react more than their actual families."

But apart from her duties on The Voice, Sonia also co-hosts Today Extra alongside David Campbell. And she has no plans on giving up the role any time soon.

"I'm happy to keep doing it all as long as they're happy to have me," she maintains. "It's such a great thing to work on – and so much variety."
