The 48-year-old, who stars as infamous gangster Mark 'Chopper' Read, has revealed the physical transformation he undertook to prepare for the role, including a considerable amount of weight gain.

"We were servicing between 25 and 30 years of his life on the show, and I just put on weight until I got to a place where I thought it would service the whole story," he tells TheFIX exclusively. He says it only took "a few weeks" to get the look he wanted.

"And it was easy to put the weight on because I'm 48, and it doesn't take much," the McLeod's Daughters alum says.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, he admits the experience was quite enjoyable.

"It's pretty easy and it's an enjoyable process eating all the naughty stuff," he laughs. "Just lots of carbs, lots of sugar. Lots of naughty things. It was a naughty fest!"

Underbelly Files : Chopper star Aaron Jeffery is no stranger to powering through trying circumstances. No pain, no gain : 'It was a lot of fun, but my neck was so knotted from having my ears pinned back every day,' he revealed this week.

He has no idea how much weight he actually gained, but says that he ended up on the last hole of his everyday belt.

And Jeffery admits that people treat him differently when he gains weight for a role.

"As a society, there seems to be a prejudice against bigger people," he says. "You do notice when you're carrying a bit of weight that people treat you differently. I'm lucky that I'm only doing it for a short amount of time."

Jeffery previously starred as bikie-turned-police-informant Frank O'Rourke in2012's Underbelly: Badness, and says he had to put on a lot more weight for that role.

"I really wanted him to chunk up," he recalls. "After a few weeks, I was kind of glad because I was getting sore, and your joints do feel that extra weight on your body.

"But once I'm in the character I love it because there's nothing better than being able to transform like that. I love looking at a completely different character in the mirror."
