Yoko Ono is to receive a songwriting credit on John Lennon ' s ' Imagine '. So tonight, it is my distinct honour to correct the record some 48 years later, and recognise Yoko Ono as a co - writer of the NMPA Centennial Song ' Imagine ' and to present Yoko Ono with this well-deserved credit ."

Billboard reports the the National Music Publishers Association has awarded John Lennon ’ s “ Imagine ” with the Centennial Song Award. They’ve also given Yoko Ono credit as a co - writer on the track.

Yoko Ono has been credited as the co-writer of her husband John Lennon's iconic peace anthem Imagine.

The song was honoured by America's National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) with their Centennial Song Award at a ceremony in New York City on Wednesday (June 14), which Yoko, 84, and her son Sean Ono Lennon, 41, attended.

According to editors at Billboard magazine, NMPA organisers surprised the musician and conceptual artist at the event by announcing they were officially crediting her as a co-writer on the 1971 track.

"While things may have been different in 1971, today I am glad to say things have changed," NMPA president said David Israelite. "So tonight, it is my distinct honor to correct the record some 48 years later, and recognize Yoko Ono as a co-writer of the NMPA Centennial Song 'Imagine' and to present Yoko Ono with this well-deserved credit."

Yoko Ono will receive a co - writing credit for her late husband John Lennon ' s song Imagine , it was announced yesterday. Once Ono is credited as Lennon ' s co - writer , the song could remain in copyright for several more decades.

JOHN LENNON ’ S Imagine will see Yoko Ono added to the writing credits , 45 years after the song’s release. The surprise was revealed by showing a clip of Lennon saying that Imagine “should be credited as a Lennon - Ono song.”

The decision to credit Yoko was taken because before his death in 1980, John admitted his wife should be credited for coming up with the song's theme and lyrics, which question the world's religious and political divides.

An old BBC interview with John was played at Wednesday's ceremony as evidence of Yoko's claim to be a co-writer of the song.

"Actually that should be credited as a Lennon-Ono song because a lot of it - the lyric and the concept - came from Yoko," John said in the vintage interview. "But those days I was a bit more selfish, a bit more macho, and I sort of omitted to mention her contribution."

After the ceremony, where rocker Patti Smith and her daughter Jesse performed Imagine, Sean revealed his joy on Instagram, writing that it was the "Proudest day of my life".

He also described how his mother welled up in tears when the interview with her late husband acknowledging her contribution to the song was played.

In the 45 years since its release, Imagine has regularly topped polls asking members of the public to choose the the best song of all time.

Hundreds celebrate 'mud people' festival in the Philippines .
Filipino devotees muddied their faces and covered themselves with dried banana leaves on Saturday to celebrate a religious festival which also has roots in Japan's occupation of the country during World War II. The annual "Taong Putik" or "Mud People" festival, held in the town of Aliaga, 100 kilometres (60 miles) north of Manila, honours John the Baptist. Hundreds of men, women and children walked to a muddy field at dawn and covered themselves from head to toe with mud and dried banana leaves, with some residents saying their appearance was meant to evoke the attire of John the Baptist in Biblical times.
