In the documentary, the prince tells host Charlie Ottley that he owns several restored properties in Transylvania , now part of Romania, and that genealogists show he is descended from Vlad the Impaler .

Charles has also done extensive charitable work in the region, aimed at encouraging conservation, traditional farming systems and sustainable development through the Prince of Wales Foundation.

It is believed that Queen Mary, consort of George V, Charles’ great-grandfather, was related to the 15th Century slayer - and the Prince of Wales certainly seems delighted by the idea.

“The genealogy shows I am descended from Vlad the Impaler, so I do have a bit of a stake in the country,” he joked in a documentary on the Carpathian Mountains.
