A woman is facing a murder charger after her 92-year-old mother was found dead at an aged care home in the NSW Southern Highlands.

Barbara Mary Eckersley, 67, was arrested on Wednesday following the death of her mother at the facility in Bundanoon on Sunday night.

The mother, named in media reports as Mary E White, was a respected palaeobotanist, author and conservationist recognised for her outstanding achievement and service to botany.

Before becoming an author and lecturer, Dr White worked as a consultant to the Bureau of Mineral Resources in Canberra and was a research associate at the Australian Museum in Sydney.

Eckersley's matter was briefly mentioned in Goulburn Local Court on Thursday where Eckersley did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

The matter is due back in the same court on August 10.
