A man who bludgeoned his pregnant girlfriend to death with a tomahawk, killing her unborn child, told his coworkers "I'm going to go to jail for life over this woman" in the days leading up to the attack.

With his hands and feet shackled, Brock Wall, 38, was today sentenced to life behind bars for murdering Fabiana Palhares on the Gold Coast in February 2015.

Justice Ann Lyons described his "murderous rage" as the "stuff of nightmares".

"You stalked her, spied on her, denigrated her and abused her," Justice Lyons said.

The court heard Wall bashed Ms Palhares, who was 10 or 11 weeks pregnant, after breaking into her Varsity Lakes home and savagely beating her until she was unconscious.

Despite two domestic violence orders being made against Wall, the carpenter continued to stalk and harass his ex-girlfriend over jealousy.

Wall told colleagues "I am going to f------ kill her, I might punch her in the guts first."

In notebook entries Wall made while in custody, he wrote "I feel no sorrow".

"I strangely feel relieved you are dead."

Ms Palhares' brother flew in from Brazil to be at this morning's sentencing in the Brisbane Supreme Court.

Supporters and detectives involved in the case sobbed as the facts were read out.

Days before his trial was due to start, Wall pleaded guilty to murder. He represented himself during this morning's hearing.

He was given two life sentences for the murder of Ms Palhares and her unborn child.

He has a non-parole period of 20 years, but with time already served will be eligible for release in 16-and-half-years.
