As the mercury plummets towards zero, people are being warned to rug up and prepare for the coldest weekend of the year. 

Unsurprisingly, the highlands in New South Wales and Victoria will bear the brunt of the bitter temperatures but city-slickers are also not immune to the chill.

Suburbs in Melbourne have frozen to 2C while parts of Sydney's west will experience weather below freezing over the weekend - hitting as low as -1C.

And according to Bureau of Meteorology Senior Forecaster Jake Phillips, the east coast's glacial conditions have yet to reach their trough. 

'Just about the whole state is cooler than average for this time of year. In some parts of the state it can be five or six degrees below average,' he told Daily Mail Australia.

'It’s been colder than average yesterday and today and the next couple of mornings are going to be even colder yet,' said Mr Phillips. 

'Even in the city we’ll be looking at temperatures below average, minimums on the weekend, particularly Sunday, it might get down to four or five degrees essentially.

Elsewhere in eastern Australia, the notoriously frosty city of Ballarat in central Victoria had its coldest July day in 24 years this week.

In the nearby city Bendigo, temperatures were also at a record low, freezing through its coldest July day since 1996. 

On Saturday, Melbourne's mercury will drop to just 3C while the Sydney CBD will hit just two degrees warmer. 

However, Melbournians will have the upper-hand when it comes to the much-craved daylight, with the sun-setting at 5.18pm compared to darkness reaching Sydney at just 5.03pm.
