A sophisticated drug trafficking operation between Ireland and Australia has been uncovered after a two-year transnational investigation into an established Irish drug cartel, which has led to the arrest of at least four Irish nationals in Australia and New Zealand.

The alleged drug ring is said to be linked to one of Ireland's most prominent crime gangs, the Kinahan cartel, a drug and money-laundering racket worth hundreds of millions of dollars, with networks stretching around the world.

The Kinahan cartel has previously been described as having made Ireland the main gateway for drugs into Britain, with the head of the gang Christy Kinahan considered "one of the biggest drug dealers in Europe" at a time.

'Drug flats' blight the heart of Spanish cities

'Drug flats' blight the heart of Spanish cities A decade after Spain's property bubble burst, dozens of vacant apartments in Madrid and Barcelona city centres have turned into "drug flats", to the dismay of local residents who complain of abandoned syringes and frequent brawls. "You don't live anymore. You are more afraid at home than outside," said Begona Sebastian, a 51-year-old accountant whose building was one of the first in Lavapies, a district in the centre of Madrid, to have a "narcopiso", or drug flat, where people come to buy and consume drugs.

Led by Ireland's national police, An Garda Siochana, the investigation has involved immense support from the Australian Federal Police and New Zealand authorities since 2016.

Nine people have been arrested in Ireland since January in connection with the laundering of drug trafficking proceeds back to Ireland via Western Union money transfer.

Previous arrests in Perth, Darwin, Sydney and Christchurch have also been linked to the operation.

Last week six people were arrested during planned searches across the greater Dublin area, in which €250,000 (about $400,000) was seized after it was discovered in a mattress.

That's not a new thing and has meant Facebook has had a presence in the United States and in Ireland. Data for Facebook users outside the US, Canada and EU is shifting from Ireland to California. That's data for 1.5 billion users according to reports and mainly affects users in Africa, Asia, Australia and Latin America.

Irish authorities have confirmed a number of those arrested to date have previously "travelled to Australia", where the value of cocaine is four to five times that of Ireland.

"It is suspected that this organised crime group has been engaged in this activity for a number of years prior to being identified in 2016," a Garda spokeswoman told Fairfax Media.

"The AFP and the New Zealand authorities have provided ... immense assistance ... to this investigation since 2016, having identified a number of Irish nationals suspected of involvement in drug trafficking in Australia and New Zealand," she said.

She added that the AFP did not play an active role in the searches, but was fully briefed and remain in close contact with the Garda investigation team.

Further arrests are anticipated "in the near future".

The investigation began in 2016, when Irish national police and the AFP identified the use of human couriers along a drug supply route between Australia and New Zealand, originating in Ireland.

Sources suggest the syndicate was testing the route as early as September 2014, when a 28-year-old Irish national arrived off a long-haul flight at Perth International Airport.

Ian Padraig O'Heaire, from Dublin, landed in Perth after an almost 17-hour journey from Dublin, via Dubai.

He had suffered a number of seizures on the flight and emergency X-rays at Royal Perth Hospital would soon reveal why.

O'Heaire had swallowed 27 balloons of cocaine, or almost 200 grams, with a purity of more than 69 per cent.

In 2014 the District Court of Western Australia heard O'Heaire was "the classic mule", accepting the trafficking job to clear a gambling debt worth around $30,000.

He was meant to deliver the haul to another man from "the criminal community" at an Irish pub in Perth.

Instead, he was arrested and later handed a backdated sentence of four years and six months for the trafficking offence and was released in March 2017.

It is understood the Australian market was also being tested by the Kinahan cartel in 2017, when more than 30kg of a substance believed to be cocaine was found on a Brisbane building site in September.

The white substance was later revealed to contain just 2 per cent cocaine, leading Irish authorities to believe the shipment was sent as a double cross duping its buyers into believing it had been seized by Australian police, as reported by Irish newspaper Sunday World.

Irish sources say the recently dismantled network between Ireland and Australia involved male and female drug mules who were recruited to traffic cocaine to Australia, either by swallowing packages or, in the case of women, inserting it into their body cavity.

The couriers would often pose as a couple on a backpacking holiday; earning a free holiday and more than £10,000.

It has been alleged the network preferred to use women to transport the drugs, as they could remove the cocaine during the flight, before re-inserting it upon landing.

In 2016 the Kinahan cartel was at the centre of a bloody feud with the rival Hutch gang in the heart of Dublin.

The feud was set off by a violent hit on a Dublin hotel, where a squad of six men linked to the Hutch gang descended on the hotel's foyer armed with pistols and an AK-47, in an attempt to target key members of the Kinahan clan.

The AFP declined to comment on the investigation, saying only that it enjoyed a "close working relationship with Irish authorities'', who were leading the "ongoing" investigation.
