Dozens of residents in Sydney’s south were forced out of their homes overnight when a large fire broke out in the carpark of a unit block.

Fire crews found the blaze well alight in an underground carpark in Chapman Street at Gymea just after 1.30am today.

It is unclear what caused the fire to erupt and it took emergency crews several hours to clear the smoke from the carpark.

A number of residents were evacuated as a precaution.

Nobody is believed to have been injured.

The fire is being treated as suspicious.
