Taxi drivers warned about transporting alcohol

Industry leaders have said the recent seizures should serve as a wake-up call to all drivers.

As part of initial and ongoing training, drivers are warned not to take anyone carrying alcohol into, or near, a dry community.

"Every day, several times a day, there are messages coming over the computer screen reminding drivers they can't take alcohol in," industry trainer and former NT Taxi Council chief executive Les Whittaker said.

"You can't expect a driver to search people's bags or anything like that, [but] if it's not obvious, I think the police are quite reasonable … and recognise the driver might not have known."

Mr Whittaker said the recent spate of seizures was "unusual", but flagged concerns drivers were also offering cash withdrawals on a BasicsCard.

A BasicsCard places limits on what people on welfare can buy, and can only be used at approved retailers.

"It is a serious offence, and we know if happens now and again," Mr Whittaker said.

"If they're caught doing that, they'll be in trouble … there are a few out there still doing it."
