While Alpha Cheng feels anger and frustration in the years after his father was shot dead as he left work, he tries to turn that into hope.

“There is definitely anger and frustration there … But I choose to channel that in the most positive way because that is my act of defiance against those that seek to create harm and injustice,” Alpha told the Today show this morning.

Alpha said while his family was repulsed by Alou, they were were satisfied with the sentence.

“It brings, hopefully, a slight sense of closure for us as a family,” he said. “But this is only the first of multiple trials that are going on this year.

As part of Alou's sentencing hearing, Selina Cheng read a Victim Impact Statement to the court.

"This heartless murder has robbed Curtis of a life he has worked so hard to build," she wrote.

Alpha and her daughter Zilvia stood alongside Selina as she read the words.

"I no longer have a husband to hold and the children no longer have a father to nurture and guide them. He was harmless. He was a good man, the gentlest of souls."
