An elderly woman has been given “the fright of her life” after an empty police car crashed into her home in Ipswich.

Rhoda Murray was inside her Rosewood home when she heard from a neighbor that a police car had smashed into her back fence.

“I went ‘A what!’,” Ms Murray told 9NEWS.

She ventured outside to find the car resting on her washing line, locked and mysteriously without a driver.

The vehicle rolled down the hill and picked up speed before eventually crashing into Ms Murray’s fence.

Although there was damage to her property, Ms Murray said her main concern was “missing washing day”.

“Oh my clothes line. It’s washing day tomorrow. And that’s all I’m worried about”, she said.

Police continue to investigate whether the handbrake of the officer’s vehicle failed and whether the car was in "park".
