The trio took mobile phones and car keys before escaping in a white Mercedes with registration VAS 469, police said on Thursday.

Paramedics treated the 53-year-old man for cuts to his head after he was struck with a blunt instrument, but Mr Katsaros and his mother were not physically injured.

He expressed anger that the men who he believed to be Sudanese immigrants had run amok and messed with an innocent family.

"They make the respectful Sudanese people look bad," Mr Katsaros said in his Facebook post, as he urged people to stay safe and defend themselves.

Police released image of the stolen car and appealed for information to help solve the crime.
