Wally Whitworth is a 96-year-old World War II veteran who survived a spectacular crash in Heidelberg, in Melbourne’s north-east.

The great-grandfather was visiting his sick wife at the Austin Hospital last week when he hit the accelerator instead of the brake.

His Ford Fairlane sped across busy Burgandy Street, flew over two parked cars, before crashing into Warringal Private Hospital.

Today Mr Whitworth spoke exclusively to 9NEWS about the smash.

The father of seven said he was thankful no one else was hurt.

"That's what we can't work out, there was no one in sight," he said.

The former mechanic, who has spent the past seven decades behind the wheel, from driving trams, buses, taxis and Mr Whippy Vans, said pedals in modern automatic cars are poorly designed.

"That's the stupidest bloody thing they've ever invented, putting two pedals an inch apart."

His licence is currently under review, and Mr Whitworth will now have to undergo a medical review before VicRoads makes a decision concerning his licence.

But for the near-centenarian, he said he's not ready to hand over the keys just yet.

"You get that medical test and the police and doctors know that you're okay, well you go by them."

AOL is killing off its Alto email app .
AOL informed users of its Alto email service that it’s shuttering the app on December 10. Alto made its debut back in October 2012, when AOL previewed it to users as a smarter inbox for a range of email services, with an interface designed to help you manage your messages better. In 2015, it evolved into a modern mobile app that mimicked Google’s Inbox in some ways.
