A cyclist has died after colliding with a four-wheel drive while competing in the Victorian Masters Road Championships.

Police believe the man lost control of his bicycle and crashed with the 4WD on Sunday afternoon on Thwaites Road in Yannathan.

The man, aged in his 50s, died at the scene. No one else was injured and the driver is assisting police with inquiries.

Cycling Victoria's chief executive Paul Jane and president Glen Pearsall issued a joint statement urged people to stay safe on the roads following the death of the "talented Masters cyclist".

"Cycling Victoria is devastated to learn of the loss and we offer our deepest condolences to the family of the cyclist," the statement reads.

"We will be focusing on the welfare of our volunteers and officials involved in the incident over the coming weeks and assisting police investigating the incident."
