  Two people rescued from car in floodwaters on north coast of NSW Emergency services have rescued two people and their dog after they got caught driving in floodwaters on the New South Wales north coast. Crews from the Mullumbimby State Emergency Service received a call for a car stranded on a causeway at Billinudgel this afternoon.Extra volunteers have been recruited this weekend with the Bureau of Meteorology issuing a minor flood warning for the Richmond River at Coraki and Bungawalbyn and the Wilsons River at Lismore.A severe weather warning is currently in place from the mid north coast to north of the Queensland border.

Remember, for flood emergency assistance from the SES call 132 500. Block toilets, household drains, sinks and plugs to stop sewerage backflow. Floodwater is dangerous – never drive , walk or ride through floodwater .

It takes driving through just 15 centimetres of water to sweep a small car into floodwaters, Victoria's State Emergency Service says.

The rescue agency's new '15 To Float' campaign warns motorists of the danger of driving into floodwaters - which it says is becoming increasingly prevalent.

"Over the last nine months we've seen over 100 vehicles that have ended up in floodwaters where our SES volunteers have had to undertake a rescue," Tim Weibusch from SES Victoria said on Monday.

"Fatalities in flooding are on the increase as a result of vehicles entering floodwater."

In terms of natural hazards, floods are the second highest killers in Australia, behind heatwaves.

The SES says just 15cms of water is enough to make a small car float and drift away in floodwaters, while 45cms of water will do the same for a 4WD.

The advertising campaign includes a video showing a small hatchback floating in 15cm of water and only needing a tiny push to start travelling a significant distance.
